They’re so cool! Who doesn’t love bright, shiny, new objects?!

But what’s their longevity?

I was thinking about this yesterday when I saw that both Redfin and Compass were laying off a good chunk of their workforce. Those companies scared me when they first came into my world. As a Realtor with an established, older, fairly conservative brokerage, I thought these newcomers had the ability to grab some of our market share. And possibly they did, but if so, how long will that last now?

So in my other business, which is health and wellness, I see the same thing happen over and over again. The latest treatment for this, the best cure for that, the best preventative, the best weight-loss program, the latest skin care products… the list goes on and on. And who wants to miss out on the latest and greatest? But have you noticed how short-lived and fly-by-night most of them are? Here today, gone tomorrow – or at least next year.

I watch the trends come and go, but feel really good about sticking with the tried and true, the tested and re-tested, the companies that have stood the test of the time with the products that have improved over time. Shaklee was that up-and-coming company once – 65 years ago! As was Windermere – 50 years ago! Did I mention tried and true?!
